What is a Marble?

A marble is an object used as a toy or collector’s item. They are sometimes made from glass, agate, clay, or plastics. The size of the marbles depends on the manufacture, but they are typically ¼ inch in size. Larger marbles are also available and can be up to 1 foot in size. These special collector's items can be very expensive, and mostly the largest available in stores in 3 inches.

Marbles have multiple purposes - they can be games for children, or simply as toys. They can also be collector’s items, for adults, or older children. Many adults’ collect marbles as a way of remember their childhood. Some marbles can be very expensive, and some are very rare.

Collecting Marbles is an extremely popular pastime.

Some types of the most common design of marbles that collectors may choose to collect:

  • Cleary Marbles that are clear glass, and also available in plain colors. Such as red, green, yellow, blue, and purple, etc.
  • Indian - A dark blue marble with a mixture of bands or stripes running around it.
  • Milkies - A white colored marble that is semi translucent.
  • Peewee - A very small marble. These little marbles are less then 1/2 inch in size.
  • Shooter - ½ to ¾ inch in size. Usually used as a target for the players to aim at.
  • Steelie - A steelie could also be called a ball bearing a solid steel ball.
  • Lutz - These handmade marbles feature slight hints of gold or goldstone within a clear glass body.
  • Chalkies - Made from clay or earth wear. Unglazed, and not the best choice for playing games. These are usually just used as collector’s items.

How to care for my marble collection?

It is important to take care of your marbles if you are planning on becoming a collector. You may which to play with your marbles when you are a child, but keep aside your favourite or special marbles for part of your collection.

The best way to keep your marbles clean and looking new is by using a toothbrush and tap water. Once clean, keep them in a glasses case or box. Some people use toothpaste to clean their marbles - using a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean your marbles is not advisable; some toothpaste contain harsh abrasives such as baking soda and could damage your precious marbles. It is best to use only water if unsure.

If you have a marble that is damaged or chipped, there are dealers or collectors who specialize in repairing them. Seek advice and do not try to repair the marbles yourself. Some marbles will decrease in value if they are repaired - so it may be better just to keep a damaged one as part of your private collection.

If you are a serious collector - it may be worth investing in marble display cases or stands. These are available online, or on eBay where you can get a much better deal. These specially designed cases will stop your marbles getting damaged by scratching and rubbing together.
