Being such a popular game, and being played for hundreds of years, the sport of marbles has expanded and changed over the years – producing many different designs and sized marbles.
There are many materials used to make marbles, some much more common than others – glass, metal, stone, ivory, ceramic, clay, porcelain, gem stones, and pottery are all examples of materials used to make marbles. Certain types also have different finish – such as polished, glazed or unglazed, which all change the appearance of the marble.
Apart from the material used, marbles are also available in a range of sizes, although the most common size is now half an inch, with larger shooter marbles being roughly 3 /4 to an inch in size.
Most commonly, most people refer to the types of marbles available by the colours and designs of the marbles themselves – most people will be familiar with cat eye or snake eye marbles – which are clear with a streak of colour in them, but there are lots of other designs available, such as bumblebee, tiger, and toothpaste to name a few.
